FOOTBALL.
Air Bates, who is one of the leading cricket and football authorities in Wellington, has been in Auckland for some time with the Native Ministei 1 . During the week I had a conversation with him respecting; the proposed New Zealand team for England, when to my surprise he told mo that little or nothing was known of the matter in Wellington. He himseif and all the leading football spirits of Wellington were opposed to any such team going Home, considering the proposal premature and not satisfactory. It seemed to him that the report had originated in the Southern newspapers, for none of the Wellington footballers knew anything of it, and were as much surprised as anyone else when ib was proposed. 1 was very glad to hear this and, if the Wellington, Dunedin, and Auckland authorities are opposed to the schome then it is sure to be knocked on the head, greatly to the benefit of colonial football.
