A i<ew showers fell this morning bub the weather soon cleared. Ifc is a bright day, bub rather cold, a southerly wind blowing. The course is in splendid, order. The attendance in the members enclosure is very large, bub of the public not equal bo former years. The proceedings opened with the Hurdles for which Garabaldi ridden by Louner was served up a warm favourite, bub the Christchurch sports sbeadily followed Irish King, who won wibh plenty in hand. The race was enbirely between bhese two. Resulbs : Handicap Hukdlks, one mile and a-half, of lOOsovs. The second horse to receive lOsovs. , the third ssovs. from the stakes. Dudu was rushed on the totalisator, and would not have paid more than level money. The whole of the seven acceptors came bo the post. Mr Driver got them away the tirsb bime of asking bo a capibal starb. From a tine start Occident jumped off, followed by Vandal, Dudu lying third, and Manton fourth. These posibions were maintained for a mile, when the favourite went up to the light-weight, and l'acedhim for a couple of furlongs. Vandal also now crept up, and improved his position, while Dudu fell back beaten. Like a shot from a gun, Sultan came through the field, and overhauling the leader halt-way up the straight, won comfortably by three lengths and a half. Occident had a great light for third place, which he secuied, throe or four lengths behind Vandal After shaking off Manton, a surprise came in an asbounding run by St. James. Avho made a good fourbh, with Manton fifth, Enid sixth, and Dudu, the favourite, absolutely last. Time, 3min 53Asec. Dividends : Inside, £8 Is ; outside, £12 16s 6d. Dunedin, Feb. 21. Thk second day's racing takes place to-day. The weather is dull, but there is no likelihood of rain. The attendance is very good. All of fche local bookmakers were good winners over the Cup yesterday. All on the card weighed out for the Hurdles, for which Trapper was in strong demand, Irish King and Peter Osbeck being next in favour. O'Brien's Vandal, 7st lib.. 1 Butler's Manton, ttat 91b . • . . 2 Vandal was a decided favourite, Manton and Kavenswing next in demand ; Premier led for a mile with Vandal second, Ravenswing third, Manton at backcourse. Premier retired beaten, leaving Vandal and Nan with Manton last, but on the turn Dudu came through astonishing fast, and entering the straight had good lead, which she maintained till the end, winning by a length. Quoner Tart and Way Lee, of Sydney, are Masons. Hitter yon Grocholski, leader of the Poles in Austria, and influential among the Poles in Russia, is dead. There is now a sore of Rusewn colony, composed mainly of men of letters, established at Harrow-on-the-Hill.
