APPROACHING WHAKATANE. INTENTIONS BELIEVED TO BE PEACEABLE. APPLICATIONS FOR ARMS REFUSED. Wellington, Feb. 19.
Te Kooti will probably reach Whakatan c to-day. He is accompanied by men* women, and childven, which is considered evidence of his peaceful intention. As the road is mountainous end the natives are friendly they will probably stop somewhere on the way, feasting with the Maoris. The Government have no intention of supplying: arms to settlei's as requested, consideiing the demand preposterous, because, by such a course, they would themselves be helping the people to break the law. They will rely on the volunteers to keep the peace and if these are not sufficient other measures will be taken.
