WAIORONGOMAI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waiorongomai, Thursday.
Mining : — A partial cleaning up toofc place at the battery on Monday last, and a small portion of concentrates was put through the matting furnace, A slight accident occurred to Butlers spur brake, whereby operations on the tramway were suspended for a few days. It appea' s that when lowering n truck on Saturday morning last, tho revolving shaft broke, this has now been repaired, and work will I understand be resumed tomorrow morning. Bailing operations have been resumed in the Alameda shaft under the ' whip' process to clear it of water, and I am given to understand that the further sinking of the shaft will be immediately proceeded with. Band of Hope : — A very successful enteitainment was gi\en in the Public Hall on Tuesday evening last to a large and appreciative nuilience, the programme wns a varied and interesting one, and all who took part were waimly applauded by tlio-e present, the meeting was piesided over by the Key Mr Lawiy, Miss Nixon kindly officiated at the oigm. General: — On Sal in clay evening next a meeting of membeis of: the Mining Accident Relief Fund will be held in the Werahiko Public Hall, the object being to receive the (Jommittees leport, adopt rules, and for the ti.nib.ictiou of any other business that u\ny be bi ought forward. Mr ILII, the Government inspector of Spoii il Settlements ariived fiom Auckland on iSundriy List, and pmceeded to the Gordon Settlement the following morning, he inspected about half the sections \esteidriy, and completed his woik to-day, returning to Wniernngonifii this, evening, his report on the .settlement will be anxiously looked for. Infant Moitality :— I regret to stite that mortality amongst infants appears to be on the increase heie. On Monday morning last the infant daughter ot Mi N. Basket, aged 15 months, af tor five day h illnesH fell a victim to that diie disease d\sentry. The iuneial (a private one) took place on Tuesday, Mr llunt officiating at the grave. This i.i the third death within about six weeks, rather a big per centage for our small population.
