FIVE THOUSAND PAID FOR THE LETTERS. IMPORTANT EVIDENCE. London, February 17.
At the sitting of the Commission to" day, Mr Soames, solicitor tor the " Times," said in his evidence thdt Houston, the Secretary of the Patriotic League, brought the letters to the " Times," siatmg that Pigott wanted ;£s>ooo. The " Times '' propnetaiy retained them, being baiished that they were genuine, and paid Houston Houston paid Pigoit The " Times," he said, also paid Maser, the American detective, to watch Paine It, Labouchere and others. Lewis, he fuither stated, was employed by the detective to shadow Pigott, and the " Times " also did the same. He was not aware why it was he had not enquired from Pigott where he obtained ihe letters. He also secuitd letters from Labouchere to Pigott enclosing cen^i notes, and a letter to Lewis charging him to admit the rorgciy. Mr Macdonald cioss-examined the witness, when he said he was notawar c the letters were offered to the " Pall Mall Gazette."
