BATHING FATALITY
Napier, Feb. 17. A distressing drowning accident occurred near Clive yesterday. Mr Rainbow, pro" prietor of the well-known boys' boarding", school, went to the Ngaruroro River with three boys to fish. The boys asked and obtained permission to have a swim. Two of them got rather far away, and Mr Rainbow called to them to come back. As* they appeared to have some difficulty in making headway against the current, he jumped in without stopping to take off his clothes. He never rose again. He either struck his head against a snag, or was seized with cramp of the respiratory organs, for he is noted as a powerful swimmer. The body was recovered in the evening. Mr Rainbow was one of the most popular men in the province, and his death has cast quite a gloom over the town. The two boys in danger reached a snag, where they held on until the third got a Maori canoe and rescued them.
Cambridge Cheese Factory Company have decided to send five tons of cheeso to England per Tongariro, the price having fallen too low in Sydney.
