(Before H. W. Northcroft, Esq, Warden.) Applications for Protection :— Eichard Burke, for protection for Wei- j come L, Hd., Waiorongomai, for three months. Granted. Matthew Edgar, for protection for Lord Nelson L. Hd., Tui, for three months. No appearance of applicant. Struck out, j James" Don, for protection for Golden Crown Special Claim. Te Aroha, for three months. In reply to the Warden, the applicant stated that he asked for protection because there was no available means for treating ! the ore. The Mining Inspector (Mr Wilson) stated that some useful work of a durable character had been done by the shareholders, in the way of cleaning out and substantially timbering the old drive in the ground, etc., but he saw no prospecting operations in progi ess on the occasion of his last visit of inspection ; five men were however at work on the ground. In reply to the Warden, Mr Don paid no [ quartz had yet been broken out, but the shareholders were now ready to break out quartz if they hod any means at their i disposal of getting it treated ; six men had been kept at work on the | claim up to within a couple of weeks past. ! The Warden said he should not grant absolute protection for the ground under the circumstances, but was willing to grant protection to work with a fewer ! number of men than the Act required ; meantime he would wish the Mining Inspector to visit the ground and report on j the work done. | "William Andrew, for protection for the j Ophia claim (one man's ground), WaioI roncomai, for three months. The Mining Inspector (Mr Wilson) stated applicant had worked his claim very well indeed. Granted. Applications for Water Kaces : — Te Aroha S. and G. M Co., for right to conptvnct a water race at Waiorongomai, to include the stream known as the Army Gully creek. Mr H. Crump appeared on behalf of the applicants. Mr James Munro handed in a petition objecting to the granting of the application as follows : Waioronsromai, February" 4, 1889. To Mr Warden Northcroft. Sir, — We the undersigned residents and householders of Waiorongomai township, humbly request that you will reserve the creek known as the Army Creek for domestic purposes, as it is the only source from which the residents of Waiorongomai township can obtain a supply of clean water for domestic purposes. The petition was signed by James Mnnro, Hugh McLiver, Jas. Courtney, Edw. Burton, etc., etc. 33 in all. Mr Munro said the creek applied for was the only available one for Waiorongomai; that since the Alampda shaft on the flat had been sunk all the wells in the township had as a consequence gone dry ; and if the sinking was continued there would be no water left at all. The Warden to Mnnro : Has the shaft bepn kppt clear of water ? Mr Munro : No your Worship. The Warden : Then how could the sinking of the shaft have drained all the weli<* of the township, as you state ? Mr Crump said there was always plenty of water available for a supply for the township from Wniorongomai Creek. The ppiition presented by Mr Munro had been got up, and taken round the previous night after dark, and a good many signed it not knowing its real intent, and would now be clad to sign a counter-petition The Warden said the petition hnd 33 fiisrnatures attached, and therefore carried weight with it. and it would be his duty to see further into the matter. Addressing himself to Mr Crnmp the Warden said : If the applicntion can possibly be grafted you shall have it. Referred to Mining Inspector to report on. Occupation License • George Eobson and Wm. Emerson, for right to occupy about ten acres of native land at Te Aroha. Granted, Machine Site, Tui ; J. M. Chambers*, on behalf of Champion G. Mine", Lim., for machine site. No appearance of applicant. Adjourned till next Court day, Te Aroha S. and G. M, Co., for a second water race at Waiorongomai. The Warden informed Mr Crump, who appeared in support of the application that the case would stand adjourned till next Court day, meantime he could proceed with the work. H, H, Adams, for right to construct a water iace at Stoney Creek, Adjourned, Mining Inspector to inspect nnd report thereon ; the Warden pointing out that although it was shown on the plan accompanying the npplicalion where the race was to end, no outlet for the water from the terminating peg was shown, Residence Site, : E, H, Littlejohn, for a residence site, Hill Track, Waiorongomai, The Warden asked applicant how many sites he wanted ; already four if not more had been granted to him, and asked what he proposed doing with them, It really meant " trucking in sites, Applicant stated he only held one at present, the others he had transferred, He meant to live on the site he now applied for. Application adjourned, and referred to the Mining Inspector to report upon.
