ATHLETIC NOTES. OTAGO Y. CANTERBURY. Christchurch, January 25.

The interprovincial match between Otago and Canterbury commenced to-day and will be concluded to-morrow. So far the local representatives have nob finished their first innings. When play commenced, runs came very slowly, and six overs were sent down for four runs, until Harman cut Claffey nicely for 3, and after more slow play, Marshall drove Claffey hard for- four, 18 runs only being made in three-quarters of an hour. MacCormick superseded Claffey, and Marshall out him for 2, bringing 20 up. At 30 1 Claffey replaced Downes, and Marshall signalised the change by putting him for 4 to leg twice, bringing 40 up. When 50 had been recorded, Parker replaced Claffey, and Marshall drove his second ball to tue; boundary, but at the next ball he retired, well caught in deep field by Boddington. Labatt followed, and he and Harman kept the fielders busy, 'until the scoring board showed 90. Directly afterwards, however, Labatt retired, beautifully taken by Bell off Parker. Rayner took the place at the wickets, and a four to each man brought 100 up. On resuming after luncheon, Downes took up the bowling in place of Parker, and Claffey instead of MacCormick. After slow play 130 was shown, but soon afterwards flarman, hitting at a bumping ball from Claffey, was neatly taken by Niven at the wickets, having played a splendid game. Rayner was clean bowled by a shooter, and Downes, who had been bowling steadily throughout, caught Studholme off his own bowling. The Canterbury captain filled the vacancy. At 191 Frith wab smartly stumped off MacCormick, and Cuff took his place. Runs now came very slowly, but both batsmen playing a good game, 244 runs were made up, when Cotterell gave Niven a chance at the wicket, which was accepted, and the Canterbury captain was out. Matthias followed, and he and Cuff made a fine exhibition. 320 quickly went up, and just as it seemed as if nothing could stop the runs, Cuff was stumped. Fowke filled the breach, only to lose Mathias, who skied Parker, and was caught. Halley, the last man, joined Fowke. Niven, the wickefckeeper, had the misfortune to have his finger pub oat, and Fox took his place. Time was called immediately afterwards, 354 runs having been compiled for the loss of nine wickets.
