CONDITION AND PROSPECTS OF FIJI.
The " Fiji Times " says : The advent of 1889 finds Fiji in certainly a better position than she occupied at the commencement of 1888. Stupefying lethargy has been shaken off and healthy activity appears. % Agriculturists and manufacturer*, mechanics and merchantsaiealike cheered by the ptospect ; and the consciousnets that prudent measures and hard work combined will go far to assure the basis of a- settled prosperity, lend animation to effort aud replace gloom and despondency. The "wretched weather experienced during the first nine or ten months of the year notwithstanding, the agricultuial prospects of the colony are most satisfactory. The mills will exceed their estimated output and fruitgrowers and shippers are making small fortunes. New land has been and is being prepared for cultivation, and the result will be not only a handsome return from the markets nearest to hand, but a state of preparedness* for taking advantage of the new outlet which will be available by means of the Canadian-Pacific line.
