SOCIETY ISLANDS. FRANCE EXPECTS THEIR SURRENDER. Paris, January 22
M. Freppel, representative of the Department of Fmisterre, complained in the Charabei of Deputies that Chili had been allowed to annex Easter Island, and Great Britain Rarotonga, Rimutara, and Ruiutu. Admiral Krant/i, Minister of Marine, \eplied that Easter Island was valueless as a nav?l station, and lhat Rarotonga had never belonged to France. He must, however, ask Great Britain to surrender the other islands, on the 'ground that ih^y are dependencies of Tahiti. National honour was in no way involved, and theie was no reason to talk of war. M. Freppel insisted that the Govern ment were guilty of neglect and incapacity in allowing British extension in Oceania.
