SPORTING NEWS. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB RACES. New Plymouth, Jan. 16.
The Taranaki Jockey Club's Summe 1 Meeting commenced to-day. The weather was fine, and the attendance iair. The Taranaki Jockey Club Handicap of 230sovp. Two miles. Escutcheon, 4yra, by Musket — Rosette, 7st 71b (Wright) i Clogs, Bst2lb ' 2 Marlborough, Bst lib ... ... 3 Emmet (6st 61b) also ran. Clogs was the favourite. The flag fell to a bad start, Marlborough getting several lengths' advantage, while Emmet was left at ohe post. Marlborough led past the stand, with Clogs thiee lengths away, and Escutcheon a couple of lengths behind. At the back of the course Clogs and Escutcheon began fco close on Marlborough, and at the mile they were a length away from him. He led past the stand for the second time, however, going very strongly. At the mile and a-half, Clops passed him, and soon afterwaids Wright moved on Escutcheon, who was full of running. At a mile and three-quarters the race was over, bar the shouting, Escutcheon eventually winning in a canter by two lengths. Time, 3rnin 42sec. Totalisator: 152 Clogs, 52 Marlborough, 66 Escutcheon, 22 Emmet. Dividend, £3 19s.
