Tauranga Items. [From our Own Correspondent.]

Our farmeis are just con^tpei^cing .harvesting operations on some of the more forward crops, and the estimated yield, taken alt round, will be good ; though in some instances where the soil is very light the crop has been somewhat dwarfed by the long spell of dry weather in November and December. On Saturday last fruit-growers and others were rejoiced by four or five hours heavy rain, which has given the fruit a fresh impulse towards ripening, and a letter fruit harvest than for many years past 19 anticipated. A fine drying wind on Sunday, moreover prevented any damage accruing to the grain crops. The holidays have passed off without mishaps of any sort, and all the school feasts, picnics, etc., have been successful as usual. It seems a pity that in small places like this, all denominations should not combine to have one good day's outing for the school children all together, whereby greater economy would result an.l harmony be promoted. Onr local bodies, notably the borough j Council, are devoting their attention largely to the fashionable cry for retrenchment, and have retrenched someI thing over half their annual outlay on salaries and sijeh like heads ; the unfortunate Town Cleric is the principal i sufferer, as, with a decreased salary, he I has an increased load of duties, as clerk, returning officer, dog registrar, collector, wharfinger, etc. The County Council has received a surprise in the reply . f the Government to their communications, re the County boundary at Waioron^omai . A letter was read at the meeting of the County Council on Tuesday stating that the maps are wrong, and that the portion in dispute is situated in the Piako County. There is evidently some misun'ltrstanding somewhere, as it is difficult to suppose the maps so carefully prej pared by the Survey department to be incorrect, and the matter will not be allowed to rest here ; as this settlement |of the nuestion cannot be considoioJ at all satisfactory. [ Taurangn bids fair to recover gome of its old popularity as a seaside resort and calling place en route for the Hqt Lakes. i and a considerable number of the genius globe-trotter are to be seen fie.rs now.
