PERILOUS BALLOON ADVENTURE AT BALLARAT. Professor Bartholomew Severely Injured.
On Saturday, December 29fch, at Ballarat, Bartholomew, the aeronaut, had a perilous doscont in his parachute, his sensational performance taking place immediately after the baseball match on the Eastern Oval. He marie an ascent from the Eastern Oval, the \\'ind at the' timo blowing stoaclily from the northward into the city. Profossor Bartholomew ascended all right to a height variously estimated at from 2,000 to 4,000 feet, performing thrilling feats connected withtheparachute from the balloon successfully. He descended at what appeared to be terrible speed. The parachute expanded fully, but still the drop was a vow fast one, the parachute travelling right into the, heart ot the city. Tie foil upon the roof ot a shed at the roar of the Buck's Head Betel, about 500 yards from tho Oval,- and struck his legs against the edge of fche roof witli considerable violence. The iron cut into both logs, making very sovovo wounds, the left log bolow the knee being badly lacerated, and the bono injured, while tho right; • ldg' was severely torn above tho kneo. It was some little time before; 'he could be got into a conveyance ancl removed to the hospital, where his injuries were dressed. He was then taken to». Craigs Hotel, whero he has his quarters. It is feavorUthat his injuries will necessitate his retirement for some little time. His gear was secured safely, Professor Bartholomew will stay'in Ballavat foy some days.
