PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT LORD ONSLOW.

The " World "' says :— " Lord Onalow is f>ure to make a popular and successful Governor in New Zealand, and. many of his friends are astonished at the self-denial which has induced him to consent to what may be described as a partial political eclipse. He was, howevei, honestly anxious to second his old chiet Lord Knutsford's laudable desire to make a new departure in the distribution of the more important posts in the antipodes, and will doubles^ make his mark as a high-minded, energetic, and most hospitable pro-consul. JHi-> cosmopolitan dinners at Richmond Terrace will be sadly missed next session, and lie is scarcely likely to leave his coach and team of bays at home. Lady Onslow is an admirable hostess, and the colonial Freemasons may possibly not be sorry to learn that her husband is a Past Grand Warden of England." The Anglo New Zealander says : — "Hehas no direct experience in that capacity, but his training: as Under Secretary for the Colonies under Lord Knutsford "will have supplied him with a keen insight into the requirements of his new position. In other respects he possesses every qualification that the most exacting colonist could.demand. Titled, wull- to-do, young, energetic, a man of the woi Id, fond of sport and of an active life, he ca:i scarcely fail to produce a good impression. The graceful hospitality which Lady Onslow dispensed in the Colonial Exhi&ii ion year, and during the time the Colonial Conference was in session, must have won her many warm friends in the Colonies."
