THE HAUROTO IN COLLISION. ENGLISH SHIP CUT DOWN. Melbourne, January 3.
A siiKioub casualty occuiied m Hobson's Bay last night during the continuance of a blinding squall of wind and rain. The Union Compaq's s s. Hauroto collided with a large English ship named the King Arthur, which had ie~ cently arrived from Gloucester. The foice of the collision was veiy great, and the King Arthur was cut down to the water's edge. Singularly enough, the Hauioto appears to have escaped without injury, although it is probable that some of her bow plates have been damaged. The ship was at anchor in the bay at \ the time ot the collision. The King Arthur was towed to a place of safety, and lightened by the removal of a portion of her cargo, consisting chiefly of 40,862 bags and sacks of salt and other cargo. She is now floating safely, and the damage is almost wholly above the water line. The King Arthur is a biand new iron clipper of 1,598 tons register, and is on her maiden voyage. She was built by Messis W, B. Thompson and Co., of Dundee, and measures 257 feet 6 inches in length, 32 feet 2 inches in breadth, and 23 feet 2 inches in depth of hold. Messrs J. A. Walker and Co., of Glasgow, are the owners, and she is commanded by Captain W. S. Drummond. She arrived here from Gloucester last Saturday week.
