The son of Prince Charlies increased his advantage in every stride, and won withouc an etlort by a clear length, Manton beating Nelson ior second honours by a neck, and St. Michael finishing some distance behind. When the flag was lowered Artist jumped away in front, with Mangaohane, Recruit, Peter Osbeck, Falcon, Orangeman and Magnesia in that order. At the brush hurdle Artist increased his lead, and he was 15 lengths in front as they ran up tho hill, Magnesia having dropped further away. Recruit was second at the top of the hill, wheie Artist gained still huther ground, and the latter came down the hill at a sound pace and led on to the course proper, and here Recruit at the head of the .second division crept closer to the leader, and at the old water jump he dispossessed Artist of the premier position. The latter, however, was tull ot running, and he a am took command at bhe back of the course, where the field began to straggle. Peter Osbeck ran into third place at the cutting, but Artist went further away going up the hill, and at the top he had gained an advantage of 30 lengths, all the horses jumping beautifully, whilst Recruit was second, Peter Osbeck third, Falcon fputjtb, and Mangaphane fifth. The field had again begun to close on Artist as they

racod at the double in front of the stand, where it was plainly evident that Mangaohano was outof the race, and he was l'titmtnginainosb laboured fashion. Recruit was only about a length behind Artist at tho back of the course, but the latter, when going very strongly, stumbled, rolling over his rider. Recruit was thus loft with a clear road beforo him, and though Peter Osbeck was resolutely called upon, ho was never able to get within several lengths of Recruit, who won easily amidst great cheering. Orangeman was third, and Magnesia fourth. Falcon walked in with the crowd. Time, 8.36. Dividends : Inside, £6 14s ; outside, £7 17s 6d. Selling Stakes of 50sovs. For three-year-olds and upwards.
