Tljousands of spectators witnessed the destruction of the steamer John Hanna, on th.c Mississippi river, but are said to have been powerless to assist the drowning pepple. In the eagerness of' the, onlookers to get a view of the catastrophe numbers oF persons were thrust into a quagmire pn the. fiver bank and suffocated.
