DIED WITHIN SIGHT OF HOME. Auckland, Dec. 27.
Captain Williams, iate landing waiter in H. M. Customs here, was -well-known and lespected in Auckland. About eighteen months ago he proceeded home for the purpost> of undergoing an operation for cataract in the eye. For a long time he has been subject to acute attacks of eczema. He arrived in Wellington from England by the Coptic on the 18th inst., and was so ill at the time that he remained on board until Friday, when he was taken on board tbe Mararoa for Auckland, and laid in his bunk, from which he never moved alive. The Mararoa arrived in port at eleven o'clock on ;the morning of Christmas day, and just.as she was making last to the Queen-street wjharf, Captain Williams died. The daughter of the deceabed and her husband, Mrs Alfred ftierg, were on tbe wharf awaiting the arrival of the steamer, and on being informed of Captain Williams's death sent for Dr. Hooper, who had attended the deceased prior to his leaving Auckland. Dr. Hooper was promptly in attendance, and gave a certificate as to. the cause of death, on the receipt of which Dr. Philson. the District Coroner, decided that there was no necessity for an inquest. The body was removed to the residence of deceased's son-in-law, jMr Risrg, Church-street, Devonport, and $vas buried yesterday in the Devonport' cemetery. (
