Hosmeb, the oarsman in the course of an interview, stated that American sculling had declined in consequence of Hanlan's successive defeats and the dishonesty of some prominent scullers. He considered that both O'Connor and Teemer were superior men to the new champion Searle, and thought the latter's reputation was based upon comparison with Beach who must have fallen off from his earlier form.
