The American war vessels which arrived here a day or two ago to enforce the demand for the release of an American steamer, reiterated the demand of the United States Government, and asked for a money indemnity for the detention of the. steamer. Failing immedia»e compliance with the demand, they threatened to shell the port. Tne Government, however, agreed to the release of the steamer and the payment of the indemnity, under protest. Washington, December 26. The United States Governmen claims the indemnity of half-a-million dollars from Hayti for the detention of an American steamer.
