Dunedin, December 14.
The " Daily Times '' have received an urgent telegram from Mr John White, Bolicitor, from Lumsden, that Professor Brown, of the Otago University, is lost at Manapouri. Mr Brown, who is Professor of English Literature, was in company with Major Goring and Mr J. White, solicitor, exploring the country between the southwest arm of Lake Manapouri and Smith Sound. On the 6th they were to have crossed a low saddle at the foot of which they were camped, but rain coming on they decided to wait the -weather clearing up. About noon Professor Browu left the camp for a stroll up the gorge, but rain coming on the party became anxious, and searched for him until evening, but without success. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, were terrible days, "with rain, hail, and wind. Messrs White and Goring made every effort to trace their companion, but without success. Their provisions being exhausted, they left the camp on Monday, and returned to the Lake, terrible weather being experienced. Aparty of four, including Ernest Mitchell, who assisted in cutting the overland track to the Sutherland Falls, is now out t-eaich-ing. There was a depot of provisions o\ er the Saddle and another at the head of the Lake, and possibly the Professor may have got to one of these and found hhnbelf unable to return. Though an enthusiastic bushman, he is not an experienced one. He has been about the Lake beiore, and he also made the overland tiip from Wanaka to the West Coast with Mr Larnach when Minister of Mines.
