FARM POULTRY.
T&E Manchester Mnror bays : '• There is no i reason for any distinction being made between the fancier and the fatcnei. The only difference is that the fancier keeps pure bred fowls and gives them close at- i tention and breeds them stricllv to a standard of points in order bo prese: % c tlie purity of the breed, while the farmer, who s usually busy with his crops and larger stock, depends more upon ci 055 breedingIt is a mistake, however, to attempt to keep poultry withoub depending on the purity of the breed. Breeding with <\ knowledge of what you desire meiiis to undertake the work in a, systematic mannei . The fancier could not exist without the aid of the farmer, and the stock of the farmer v/ould soon degenerate into the worthless scrubs but for the careful management of the fancier. But poultry en the farm should always be bred from pure- bred males. By so doing a value of at lea^t thirty per cent. is added to the quality, while the production of eggs is increased. One male, costing but a small sum, will prevent the deterioration of stock, and there is no improvement that can be effected so cheaply as upon the flocks of poultry. Whether pure- bred or grades, the chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys on the farm make a marked comparison with those bred without regard to merit, and every farmer should aim to improve."
