[From the " New Zealand Farmer.'] A NEW POTATO PEST.
It behoves us to beware ot a potato enemy that, according to an Americun fanning journal, has been doing much mischief during the past season in the slate of New York. Our contemporary reports ;— " The cucumber flea beetle made its appearance in some of the Now York potato fields this season and i« said to bo the worst insect that has ever attacked the potato. The leaves of the vne turn black and dry up, and the stem* becomo yellow. The insect is very small, and it was some time before the cause ot" the foublo was discovered. Finally it was found that the leaves on the underside were being punc tured by the beetle. Paris-yreen, hellebore and other poisons were tried but had no effect, and we have heard of no successful effort to fight the enemy. It is reported that serious injury has been done to the potato crop in that State, and it now remains for somebody to find a remedy f >r next season. It is probable th it one will be discovered."'
