DRAUGHTS IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT.

Sinus Mi Wyllie has been in the Au«fcuilasian colonies draught© playing has become more popular thau ever before, and thi«? has resulted in raany clubs being formed for the practice of the game, and a rivaliy excited amongst playeia jjenerally, and h.is culminated in the gicat contest jubb concluded for the championship of Australasia and £f 0. won by Mr Patterson, of Victoria. Weaiesuie all lovers of the game will heartily congratulate Mr Patterson on his success, though New Zealand players hoped and in some cases expressed the certainty that the coveted honour would come to the land of the Maori. If this defeat of our best players should cause a closer study and more regulai piactice across the board with the strongest player we can meet, it will be better for us in the end than if we had won the championship. We are afraid Auckland Province would be far behind in any content. Our players seem to have no cohesion about them, or, as was said in this column a week or two ago, " they are nob clnbable," with the result, weakness and blundering in play. This should and easily could be remedied if they were only unanimous and entered into it with the same heart that other Aucklanciers do with regard to their particular form of amusement. We ventured to suggest through this column a week or two ago that a tournament should be sot up for about Christmas or New Year, but as the time is now too short to do that with success we think a Town v. Country, or City v. Suburbs and Country match, for one day of the holidays quite practicable, and this would have the advantage of making people acquainted with players whom they now do not know, and also show what theie is in the Province of Auckland in the shapeof di aught? players. Then vre come to — how to do it. This can easily be arranged if the country players are willing and would intimate such in time for players in town to make arrangements. This might be done where there are a number of players, as at the Thames, etc., by agreeing together to come up, and sending a list of probable players ; but if only one wi-hes to take part in the match he could send his name, and so arrangements could be made for a good Town v. Country match. Country players in writing should also state what day ot the holid-iys would be most suitable for them. If these suggestions are well received we would ask players to send in their names to the editor ot the Draughts column as cuJy a» possible, as there is not too much time to make all arrangements —Auckland Star.
