At the Bondi-lloyal Aquaiiimi the amalgamated syndicate of Melbourne and Sydney capitalists who a>o now responsible tor tho management of tlii.s populat seaside resort, have started it well — by taking advantage of the visit of some Maori natives who are on their way to the Melbourne Exhibition. The chief and . followers, consisting- ot some 8 halfcaste men and women from New Plymouth, have been engaged bo perform some war dances, hakas>, etc. During their stay here, as a rule, the native carrier is looked upon as a thing of the past, but with the aid of a little blue and red paint, burnt cork, etc., the natives aforesaid are enabled to portray the distinctive disfigurements of tattooing in all its hideousness and much to the wonderment of the onlooker. On Sunday last they gave a " tangi " in addition to their usual performance. During the week, the Chief Aitiwanga has with his charges received much hospitality, and i& greatly pleased to converse with anyone who can give him any information. Mr W. Hamlin, late of Auckland, had quite an interesting interview with Lhc old chicf — the conversation beingcarried on in the Maori vernacular, much to the wonderment and astonishment of the bystanders. At Manly, in addition to the well-stocked ! tanks of healthy fish, the daily concerts take place, and at Bondi and Cbogee Bay the pleasiue-seekers may c.-bay either of the scnsalionb of the day in the shape of ojiial suspension of periloub descent bj> means of the Switchback railway, or the latest axcitement,' " toboganning. " This last-named is a system of canoing upon an inclined plane, at an angle of one in, three, reminding one very forcibly of ono or two grades in the Wel-lington-Manawatu Railway. Tho modn* operandi is as follows : — Upon reaching the summit of the (structure, some 50tt from the ground, you talie your t>eat in a flat-bottomed sled with the forepart curled over, to which your feet aie attached in stiaps. If you are a novice at the slide an attendant makes the voyage with you, but on this occasion your correspondent went a lone hand — and as luck has it, still lives. At the word "ceo" your sled is released, and a^ the runners arc blackleadeel, the descent upon the inclined plane is something terrific". The weight of the oocupantb of the canoe propels it up and over another elevation, and you finally arrive atyourdes fcination amongstbagt of sawdust, verymuch out of breath, well shaken, but decidedly none the worse, and you are saved from what appears to be a tenible accident, and this is the pleasure daily undertaken by ladies and children in search of sensation. The proprietors of the Aquarium are payinghigh royalties upon the slide, which is advertised as the greatest sensation of the day.
