NEWS FROM CHINA. Thursday Island, Nov. 22.
The mail steamer from China has arrived* She brings news that the Saigon rice crop is failing in consequence of drought. The Pekin crop is a good one. The Imperial Chinese troops at the Island of Formosa, have routed the rebels. The Laseus lost 100 men. Two soldiers have been mysteriously shot at the Victoria Barracks, Hongkong.
Here is a recent incident as narrated by a Tapu correspondent which goes to show that the Auckland goldfields are no more than tapped as yet, and that miners often act foolishly in leaving for distant fields :—: — A couple of old identities of the good old Tapu timep, after cruising about all over the Australian diggings, took the notion to look up the old spot once more. No sooner had they got fairly into harness than success seemed to crown their efforts. It appears Mac and Jack (their usual cognomens) after knocking about for years met again in Auckland, and we will suppose the following dialogue took place : "Hello, Mac, old man, where did you spring from?" "Why, Jack, is that you, well same to you (mutual explanation) ; what say for a try at the old spot 2' { • So be it. " "Result so far is very satisfactory indeed. They have shown me stone worth at least 2oz to the pound, and dish prospects — well, I won't say, but a blind man could see gold. The usual result, they are peerged in all round, and to-day a two ton parcel is going through Pepper's battery, with a payable show, from a piece of ground peg and peg with them. Two of our old steady hands here are biting their finger nails off, as they both prospected on the same ground, and one actually broke down the lead, but did not try a prospect. So much for luck.
