THE MELBOURNE RACES. Dunedin, Nov. 21.
At the Williamstown meeting on Prince of Wale.s' Birthday, the cup of SOOsovs., with a gold trophy valued at 100 guineas added, one mile and three furlongs, was won by S. G. Cook's Mara (7st 31b), who went out waim favourite, Pakeha (Bst 131b) and Chicago (9st) making a dead heat of it for second place. Time, 2mins. 27secs. What should have been Carbine's position in the Y. R. C. Derby maybe guessed by the fact that in the Foal Stakes on the last day of the meeting he covered the distance (1 mile and a quaiter) in the wonclertul time ol 2mins B,jsecs, though carrying 93t 61b,' or 101b more than he carried at the Derby. Yet he won this race in the commonest of canters. The " Argus "' thus expresses its opinion : " Carbine not only beat his opponenus, but actually made a show of them. His running confirmed many persons in the belief previously freely expressed that he should have won the Derby with ease. When the Derby was decided OBrien was confident of the powers of his colt, and was anxious to match him against Ensign for £500 or £1,000, but the accident to White's horse put an end to all idea of the merits of the pair being fairly tested."
