EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR. A CHILD DROPPED INTO A RIVER. Dunedin, Nov 5.

A peculiar affair has been reported to the police at Balclutha. Joseph Valentine called on the police there on Saturday last, and reported chat on the 2Sth ultimo he was taking- a child two weeks old from his mother's house bo that of his sister, and while walking along the banks of the Clutha in the dark night he stumbled and the child fell into the river and was never seen after. Valentine has been detained in custody pending inquiries.
