A CONVICT RECAPTURED. AN EXCITING STRUGGLE. Lyttelton, .Nov. 2.

The escaped Maori prisoner, Hoani Mare, was arrested to-day at Ruapaki by Constables Drake and McCormack. The constables were sent to search the hills between Lyttelton and Heatheote. They reached the Ruapaki Pa early in the afternoon, and made inquiries among the Maoris, who denied having seen the fngutive. They were just about to leave the village, when they saw two Maoris coming down the hill, one of whom they recognised as the escaped prisoner. When about 200 yards ofl" he recognised them, and ran along Governor's Bay Eoad. They gave chase together with a Maori named Momo. The fugitive, finding they were gaining 1 , stopped, picked up two large stones and threw them at McCormack, missing him. McCormack closed with Mare, who struggled fiercely, making his loeth almost meet in the constable's left cheek. Drake and Momo came to his assistance, and the prisoner was overpowered. Five silk hankerchiefs, a quantity of tobacco, and 22=- 4d cash were found upon him. Be wore a coat, trousers, and hut which wero identified as having been taken from Harvey and Palmer's shop. Ho stated that he had gone to Papanui on the morning of his escape. On lasb Monday week lie > went to Papanui, where he had dinner at the hotel. He went to Kaiapoi, hid in the bush there till Thursday, when ho returned to Christchurcn, and hid for a week, sleeping with a Chinaman.
