AUSTRALIAN NEWS. THE NEWCASTLE COLLIERY STRIKE.

Things in connection with the Newcastle colliery strike have decidedly assumed a more hopeful complexion, and those interested are somewhat sanguine that a settlement of the difficulty may soon be arrived at. The Wallsend colliery has been the scene of some little exci'ement, as the management have put on some sixty non-union men to fill small coal under the protection of the military and the police. A difficulty arose at Stockton in regard to the trimming of coal by non-union men, which caused a suspension of work for some time. The mediation committee, from which so much was at one time expected, came to the conclusion that it was useless for them to continue their labours, and hoped that others might succeed where they had failed. On Saturday, October 20, the third conference of the masters' representatives and the miners' , delegates was opened in the Chamber of Commerce. It was felt upon all sides that the two parties were better fitted to meet now than heretofore, owing to the geneial depression, by which all are surrounded, and as anticipated the two extremes .were for once brought together in the most felicitous and harmonious manner.
