MINING NEWS. [From our own Correspondent.] Auckland, Monday.

The Champion G. and S. M. Co. Limited, Tui :—: — Your readers will be pleased to learn that at length there is a prospect of more active work being gone on with in connection with this Company's property. Mr I). H. Bayldon, surveyor, of Thames, has just completed a set of working 1 plans for the carrying on of extensive operations. 1 have been favoured with a "view of the c plan?, which are very comprehensive and reflect the greatest credit on Mr Baykion. They show the general features of the surrounding country, the various creeks and gullies, the course of the various known reefs, and their outcrops, etc. Alsoveiy minute particulars with regard to proposed future workings, etc. Biiefly stated, it is proposed by the local directors to carry out the following works :—: — Construct a double wire line of aerial tramway from the hopper at the machine site on the flat to the level. An excellent line of grade has been obtained, there being no engineering difficulties to overcome ; and the highest trestles required will be about 28 feet. The whole length of the tramway will be 128 chains. This No 4 level will probably be the main adit level for future workings (and will also afford an outlet for the Uuakaka and other mines in the immediate vicinity. In fact we believe an understanding has already been arrived at, whereby the Ruakaka shareholders will be able to connect with this level, the present face of this No 4 level being only about 160 feet from the boundary of the Ruakaka). It is the intention of the local directors of the Champion G. and S. M. Co. to put in four levels as follows : — No 1, or what will be known as the surface level, will be driven to cut the winie from whence the quartz was obtained which realised £22 per ton on being sent to the La Monte furnace for treatment. Prom start to finish this level will be 400 feet. No 2 drive, on the same line of reef, will be 900 feefe in length, and will come out on the Earl of Aberdeen Licensed Holding side of the range. This drive will be a continuation of one already in a considerable distance, and from whence stono of very fair quality has been obtained ; is situated 100 feet below No 1 level ; and it is probable work will proceed from both ends simultaneously. It is also the intention to connect these two levels by winze without delay. No 3 level will cut what is known as the cinnabar lode, and the other known reefs in the upper portion of the Co's property . The level is to be connected by means of a winze and short line of tramway with the No 4 level, which latter level will be pushed on with the others, so that, impossible, the whole of the Company's tramways and workings may start from one point, as thereby considerable expense would be saved in the matter of tramming and handling the ore. With regard to the construction of the wire tramway, I am informed that no delay is anticipated with respect to having this work gone on with, as the plans are completed, and the local directors are making the necessary enquiries as to the probable cost of construction. lam informed that nothing has been definitely decided with regard to the kind of plant that will tie 'erected for treating the ore, pending the I result obtainable from operations now being carried on at Karangahake by Mr Parkes. But should the Parkes process prove satisfactory in practical working at Karangahake, theie can be no doubt a furnace on this principle will bo promptly erected, as the shareholders in the Parkes syndicate in London are to a great extent indentical with the shareholders in the Champion G. and IS. M. Co ; and no doubt would prefer thnt system of treatment being adopted, if found suitable in practical work, which question should soon be satisfactorily set at rest. A meeting of shareholders hasTbecn fixed for to morrow (Tuesday), where the plans etc. just completed by Mr Bayldou will be laid before them.
