OHINEMURI. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Paeroa, Tuesday. Mr Josiah Martin, the well-known photographer, of Auckland, delivered a lecture at the Paeroa Hall on Saturday evening last, on " Pro-historic Man." There was not a very large attendance, and the Rev W, Katterns, of Katikati, presided. The lecturer illustrated his remarks with magiclanterns views, which, however, were not very clear. The lecture itself showed how deeply the lecturer had studied the subject. It traced the means by which ancient man, with his comparatively feeble frame, fought for existence against the huge animal life of the Stone Age — how eventually the germs of intelligence gradually unfolded in the human species, by which means man has since asserted his kingship on this globe. The lecturer's style is easy, and his vocabulary suited to a country audience, no long technical words and phrases, such as the town mouse usually overawes his country cousin with, being heard. The Ohinemuri School Committee held its usual monthly meeting on Monday evening last. Present — Messrs Lipsey (chairman), Coote, Robson, Shaw, Tetloy, and Edwards (Secretary). The Head Teacher of the Paeroa School wrote requesting that the Board be asked to increase the school accommodation, there being a very large increase in the attendance. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Board on this matter. MrElliott,Secretaryof the Puriri School Committee, wrote requesting the co-oper-ation of the Ohinemuri School Committee in a magic lantern entertainment, which Mr May, the Puriri teacher, proposed to give at Paeroa, the proceeds to be divided between the two Committees. This was heartily acceded to. It was stated that the recent appointment of Miss Lena Gibbons to the Paeroa School had been rescinded. There was, however, no word as to this from the Board, and beyond an expressed desire that amaleteacher of the third year should be appointed if Miss Gibbons were not coming, nothing could be done. There is simply nothing to report in mining matters. Mr J. Ralph informs me that a 1000 feet tunnel is to be driven in the Mariposa at Waitekauri, but when this will commence I do not know. At Karangahake the Parkes furnace is under weigh, but smelting has not yet ! been fairly commenced. The Adeline lode is looking well. The Imperial dirt is said to be worth £20 per ton at the furnace. The Paeroa Cattle Sale was well attended on Saturday, and good prices realised. Nothing but stores were entered ami realise! as follows : — Three year old steers. £2 15s to £2 19s ; two year olds, £2 10s ; empty cows, £2 15s ; a line of 12 mixed, two year old downwards, 20s 6d. A number of horses entered and but little business done.
Paeroa, Friday. The Parkes' furnace at Karangahake is now in full pwing, and working extremely well. The furnace is at present treating Clement Mooie's and party's ore from tho Kenihvorth, There has been no hitch, and there appears to be little doubt that the affair will prove to be a success. Good work is being done in the Adeline 'Amalgamated, where the lode is being opened up and shows extremely well. The New Quartz Reduction Works, known as Eeiley's plant, will re-oppn on Monday. Il is now in the hands of the Crown G. M. Co. At Waihi, Mr Walker is nearly ready for a start. If the results are as good as the preparations are ample, there is no doubt that the whole thing will be an en tiro success. No less than three tons of quicksilver have been sent to the mine this week, besides five tons bluestone, ten tons of salt, and other material. I understand that the Silvertoil ro-commenccs work in a week or so. At Waitekauri the Maiiposa is being manned, and Mr Cooper is only waiting for the plant to be erected to start work in tho Jubilee. Skene is still in good dirt in the Saxon. The school teacher's residence at Paeroa had a narrow escape from destruction by fire late on Tuesday evening last. A lighted candle placed upon a chair behind a bedroom door caught in some clothing hanging thdreon, by the door swinging back. In a few minutes the room was in a blaze, and it is owing to the efforts of Miss Baskett, one of the teachers residing on the premises, and Mr W. Sullivan, that the flames were extinguished With comparatively trifling damage. The Board of Education have appointed Miss Kate Truscott to the position of'assistant teacher at Paeroa School, vacated by Miss Baskett. Tho new line of coaches now inntiing to Waihi, owned by Mr Geo, Crosby, has met with a godd reception, Mr Kennedy has now^commonced a services to Karangahake. Max Rinkle showed here to a fair house on Tuesday evening.
Messrs T. Cook and Sons, tho wellknown tomisfc agents, of London, expect that the tourist season to this colony will bo in full swing by Christmas. ' Mi 1 J. McNiuhol lias received instructions from the Official Assignee to dispose of the whole of the live and dead stock in Mr Chas. Goulds estate, Wnitoa, The Sale will be held on Ist November, and the list oil stock, etc., will be found in our advertisement columns.
Operations are proceeding briskly at the 1 Te Aroha flaxmill, and it is likely to provd a successful industry, On Tuesday last another machine (by Messrs Price Bros,s of the Thames) was introduced for separating the vegetable matter from the fibrej and the two are now^ofkiog at top speed.Three more hands have been erlgaged to 1 attend the machines;
