700 CARPENTERS ON STRIKE IN SYDNEY.
Some eighteen months ago, owing to the slackness of trade, the daily rate of wages in the carpentering trade was reduced from 10s to 9s. During the last few months business hasagaingreatlyitnproved, consequent upon which the men have been agitating for a restoration of the old standard of wages. The masters were interviewed, but stated their inability to give the advance demanded. On Saturday last, at a mass meeting of the members of the Joiners and Carpenters' Association, it was decided to wait upon the masters to-day, and if they did not comply with the request of the men it was dgcided that the carpenters should remove their tools on Saturday. During the week a number of small employers have conceded the demand. To-day the principal masters were seen, but refused fco give way, the result being that some 700 men come out to-night, and more will follow tomorrow. The non union men are expected to support the union men, and a general strike must ensue. In that case, between 2,000 and 3,000 men will be involved in the struggle.
