At a Unionist-Tory breakfast in London on September 20th, Mr Chamberlain declared tho Libeuil Unionists had. burned their boats, and ib was impossible for them to return to the Liberal ranks. He promised unswerving suppoil- to the Government. As long as Mr Gladstone lived he would not lift a finger to hurt him. The Government was oven prepared to sacrifice personal ambitions and p'irty in ten sts to keep Lord Salisbury and Mr Balfour in power. The letter's Irish policy he commended as grand an.i noble, for which Mr Chain borlain declared himself largely responsible. ' "We," he addod, "admit entire responsi- ' bility for the whole policy of the Government, for we have been continually consulted by the Government, and our advice frequently taken." He believed an alternative policy of Home Rule should be [ tried in Ireland, and had so advised the [Government; but if the advice v.ere le- j jected, he should continue to support tho . Government. He strongly defended the policy of evictions in Ireland.
