COMMERCIAL NEWS.
London, October 10. An Adelaide cargo of wheat has been sold at 425, aud a cargo of August shipment at 42s 6d. The wool series closed to-day with the market firm. The number of bales catalogued since the opening was 235,000, of which 104,000 were sold for export and 130,000 for home consumption. 10,000 bales were held over foi next sales. London, October 11. New Zealand mutton is quoted at s^d per lb ; Australian, 4|d : and beef is quoted at 4d per lb.
London, October 9. The proposal for farthing bids at the wool auctions has been adopted by the London woolbrokers, and the innovation will commence at the November series.
October 11. At a meeting of wool buyers a resolution was passed that farthing bids at the wool auctions would not benefit either importers or purchasers, as the change would involve unbearable extra labour, confusion, and loss. Buyers have pledged themselves not to oppose farthing bids on wools below efghtpence.
Sydney, October 12. The miners who had resumed work a the Stockton Colliery have gone out on strike again in consequence of the em" ployment of non-Union coal trimmers* A start has been made to work the Wallsend colliery with non-Union labour.
Hobart, October 12. It has been suggested, by a deputation of stockowners to the Government, that New Zealand should be asked to extend the new quarantine regulations on cattle imported from the other colonies to six months instead of a month. The Premier is communicating with the New Zealand Government on the subject.
Adelaide, October 12. It now appears that the Sherard Osborne did not break the cable, as was previously supposed. She was not working at the time. The old cable has now been buoyed.
Melbourne, Octobe 12. Arrived : Te Anau, s.s., from the Bluff.
Sydney, October 11. The young man, Arthur Coulton> who shot his step-father, Patrick James Keenahan, a publican, on Moore Creek Tamworth, on September 3rd, the latter having, it is alleged, seduced^the prisoner's sister, has been convicted on a charge of manslaughter, and sentenced to two years and nine months' imprisonment. The sentence will probably be commuted, as Coulton is said to be in a rapid decline, and cannot live for any length of time.
Sydney, October 11. Messrs Chaffey Brothers are inspecting a site on the ISlepean River, with a< view of establishing large irrigations settlements there.
