A TERRIBLE GRIEVANCE. WELLINGTON CANNOT AFFORD A POST - OFFICE CLOCK. Wellington, October 11,

There is great indignation in Wellington ab the fact that the Government have refused to contribute towards the cost of a clock for the Post-office tower. Some months ago, in consequence of representations made to the Government, it was understood that they were to assist in obtaining a clock to replace the one destroyed by tire, and the Harbour Board and City Council promised to contribute £150 each towards the jjurchase, the amount of which was estimated at £900. The AgentGeneral, instructed from Wellington, obtained tenders from two or three leading firms in London, and it was found that a first-class clock could be obtained for about £700. In the new Post office tower provision is being made for the clock, but to the astonishment of everybody the Government have intimated that they do not intend to contribute one penny to the cost of a timepiece. The Chamber of Commerce have decided to urge the City Council and Harbour Board to insist on the Coyernment fulfilling its promise. &.^ < _ 8'""" "Ht
