INSPECTOR ELLIOTT AND THE SHEEP DEPARTMENT.

A meeting of sheep-owners in the Maunga. fcui-oto district was held on Wednesday evening, September 26th, to take into consideration the action of the Sheep Depart" rnent in dispensing with the services of Mr A. Elliott as Sheep Inspector to the Marsden and Bay of Islands sub-divisiona. The meeting was well attended by sheep-owners from all parts of the district, who expressed themselves in most indignant terms at the way Mr Elliott has been treated after so many years of faithful service, during which time he has gained the respect and confidence of all classes of men by the cheeriul and ready way in which he has performed all his duties, and he is looked upon by the whole of the sheep-owners as thoroughly practical in all his dealings with sheep, j besides being at all times ready and obliging. At the above meeting the following resolution was passed unanimously :— " That the ssheep-owners in this portion of the Marsden sub-division are of opinion that Mr A. Elliott is well qualified to till the office of Sheep Inspector, having the experience and knowledge necessary for that position, and that his arbitrary dismissal from office by the Stock Department on the representation of Superintendent Inspector Bayley is condemned in the strongest terms ; and further that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Minister of Lands, praying that Mr Elliott be granted the three months' leave of absence he asked for, and at the expiration of that time he be re-instated in his office without ptejudice. Failing this, that an independent commission be appointed to investigate the matter in dispute, and to find out whether Inspector Elliott has done anything warranting his dismissal or not. That a certified copy of the above resolution be forwarded to Inspector Elliott by the Chairman to make whatever use ot it he may think fit. — (Correspondent. )
