SPORTING NEWS. HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.

Napier, October- 2. The first day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, which book place today, was well attended. The weather was fine, and the racing excellent, all the finishes being very close. The concluding: events resulted : — Hawke's Bay Guineas, of 300sovs, with a sweepstakes of lOsovs each for acceptors added ; second horse to receive 30sovs | from the stake. For three-year-olds. Colts, 8st 101b ; fillies and geldings, 8st 51b. One mile. Mr P. Butler's br c Manton, by Musket — Tres Deuce (Clifford) 1 Mr Burke's br c Cuirassier, by Musket —Frailty, 8st 101b (Vaile) 2 Mr C. Beresford's ch c Leopold, by Leolinus — Lovebird, 8st 101b (Kean)... 3 Rangipai, Katinka, Foxton, Jet d'Eau, and Chudleigh also started. From a fair start, Manton got away first, with Chudleigh, Rangipai, and Katinka well up. Rounding the bend Katinka began to go up, and at the back of the course was leading by half-a-length from Manton. At the railway bend, Manton and Katinka were running together, all the others in a cluster, except Rangapai, who was last. Here Leopold and Cuirassier went up to the leaders, and in the straight a magnificent battle was fought out between Manton and the two Auckland representatives. The whips were on all three, and loud cries of "Leopold" were raised as the son of Leolinus and Lovebird got on level terms with Mr Butler's colt, but) the latter had suffi cient in him to be just too good. Cuirassier also managed to beat the chestnut just before the post was reached, and one of the grandest finishes seen on the course for a long time resulted in Manton winning by a short neck from Cuirassier, with Leopold the same distance away third, Jet d'Eau fourth, Foxton fifth, and Katinka, Cbudleigh, and Rangipai next. Time, lmin 45 sec. Dividends, £1 15s on both machines Selling Raoe, of 40sovs. Weight-for-age. 1 mile and a quarter. Mr P. Martin's b c Soudan, 6yrs, by Musket— Maid of Athol, £50, Sst lib (Reeves) 1 Mr R. Gooseman's b g Deceiver, aged, £50, 8sb lib (Clifford) 2 Mr J. Kennedy's g g Riniu, aged, £100, 9st lib (Kennedy) 3 Bronte and Duke also started. A good race in the straight resulted in Soudan winning by half a length from Deceiver, with Rimu a length away third. Time, 2min 15£ sec. Dividend : £2 15s, £2 18s. Post Stakes, of 20sovs. Once round. Mr J. Griffiths's b g The Laird (Griffiths) 1 Mr P. Martin's b m Sylph (Pell) 2 Mr C. Pitt's b g Oeo (Newman) 3 Abraham also started, and looked like winning, but fell in the straight, rolling over Lan brick, his jockey, who was not, however, seriously injured. From the place where the accident occurred The Laird ran away with the race, and won as he pleased by, three lengths from Sylph. Time, lmin 59 3-5sec. Dividends : £4 8s, £4 9s. TJiey ram this way till in the turn, when Escutcheon and Manton drew away from the others and attempted to catch the leader in the straight. Recluse came up with a -rush, and at one time looked- like a winner: Escapade, however, proved too fleet of: foot, and won by a length from Manton, Recluso third, half a length^ away in front of Escutcheon. .
