FORTY LIVES LOST. AUCKLAND, Last Night.
The ship Confederation, bound from New York to Australia, with 50 souls on board, foundered in the Pacific. Sixteen survivors reached the island of Ojee, after being 40 days at sea ; but eight of the number were afterwards drowned whilst going out in a boat to try and attract the notice of a passing vessel to rescue the castaways.
