SKATING RINKS AND RE LIGION. Archdeacon Julius Called on to Explain.
A deputation representing the proprietary °f the Alfred ,Hall (Ballarat) 3kabing rink called at the parsonage of-Christchurch proCathedral tor the purpose of interviewing Archdeacon Julius relative to some ,re marks made by him on skating and skat ing rinks during the delivery of a sermon on Sunday, evening last in the pro- Cathedral. The archdeacon, however, was. not at jhome, having gone to Melbourne. Archdeacon Julius, who generally calls a spade a spade, spoke on the occasion in question in condemnatory terms of skating rinks generally, .and found fault with the practice of offering prizes for the bestrdressed girl at this or that age. He is reported to have said that some girls were at all times fond of dressing extravagantly,, and the offering of prizesto induce one to compete in dress against' another was in viting. the , girls to 'come to the devil.' The archdeacon further stated that he was ever ready ( to support .'legitimate amusement in all shapes, .includingskating,.whpn conducted, within the bounds of moderation and, decency. He wasmot a Puritan, a.nd .was willing to give legitimate to young and t old for amusement. . The proprietors of the Alfred Hall skating • j rink ■ will- endeavour to interview;.
