DRAUGHTS ITEMS. A draughts match between the employees of Messrs Fersrusson and Mitchell and the " Otago Daily Times," was played on Saturday, Bth September, and was won by the former by 24 games to 17, 6 games being drawn. The negotiations for a mafch between James Smith, Champion of England, and Charles F. Barker, Champion of America, which have been in progress for some time, seem likely to be crowned with success. Articles for a match of thirty-two games and a stake of £200 have been received from Barker by the proposed stakeholder, Mr R. McCall, of Glasgow, who at once sent the articles on to Smith, who has signed them. The match will probably commence in December next. The games or openings, are to be restricted — each player must try every possible first move for black, making fourteen games ; in the next eighteen games each player must with white make every available reply to 11 — 15, and an interesting variety in the games is thus assured.
