INVERCARGILL WATER SUPPLY. OPENING OF THE NEW WATERWORKS Invercargill, September 12.
The most important municipal work ever u ndertaken in Invercargil, whether regaided from a monetary point or sanitary point of view, has been the establishment of a complete scheme for providing the town with an abundant and permanent supply of water. "During the past 14 years the question has been time after time discussed by the Town Council, andieports obtained from eminent engineers, but the cost always pi oved a barrier. On the appointment of Mr John Halliday to the position of Town Engineer, some three yeaia ago, he prepared an evhausthe report on providing Invercargill with an underground supply, in the course of which he said : " I purpose, in consideration of the present scheme, to base my calculations on a supply of 30 gallons per head, taking 10,000 of population, to allow forfutuie expansion ; this will give a total supply ot 300 000 gallons per day of 24 hours ; and estimating the whole fco be capable of deliveiy in 16 hours the greatest uraught will be at the rate of 18,750 gallons pei hour, or equivalent to a supply of 400,000 gallons per day. This, I consider, will be the lowest estimate that it will be advisable to make for requhements. The finality of the proposed supply i? of primary importance In this instance the question iia*> been settled by Professor Black, who in his report speaks most favourably ot it. He states it to be very much superior to Dunedin water. Organic constituents are le*» than half as much as in Dunedin supply, and the kind of organic matter is not of a bad character. The value of the pumping scheme recommends itself on the point of economy of construction, lor the outlay i.s in proportion to the existing necessities, and the town may be supplied by two or more pumping -tations should the increasing population lequire fresh works to commence with, as theyaie generally in gravitation schemes. The total length oi the reticulation in the complete scheme of giving a pipe system through every street in the town, and a double line of mains in all two-chains stieet-s is twenty-four miles." The Council, after considering the report, decided to proceed with the woik, undet JMr Halliday's hupenUion. Tendeis were accordingly called in Giea 1 ; Britain for pumping engines and water mains. Those of frlenfield Co. for the former, and ol Jnke°, Coulsin and Co. for the latter, were accepted ; and Anderson and Morrison, of Dunedin, obtained the contract for laying the water mains. The -ettling up of the engineer has jurb been accomplished, and Anderson and Morrison have alpo completed the laying of mains Shaw and McLeod are busy erecting a brick engine house, while tendeis for the supply of specially- prepared bricks of local manufacture for the tower havj been accepted, and the coniract for its erection will be let at an eaily date Tenders for a tank have already been received, and will be considered at the Council meeting on Thursday. From a test made the supply appears to be a bountiful and never-failing one. The works, which have cost thirty thousand pounds, were formally opened by the Mayor to-day, and henceforward citizens will have in the driest seasons plenty of water for household and fire-extinguishing purposes.
