ROBBED IN A CHINESE BOARD ING-HOUSE.
A man* named Michael Kiiby. alias Lynch, was on Sepb. 14 at the Police Court with having at Auckland on the 12th of September stolen the sum of 17s and a cheque for I^4 10s 6d, the goods and chattels of William Cogan, he then being in the dwelling-house ot one Ah Chee, situated in Wvndham-street. Messrs i). B. McDonald and J. M. MoLachlan were on the Bench. Inspector Broham conducted the piosecution. William Cogan deposed that lie was a carpenter residing at the Aurora Hotel, Auckland. He arrived in Auckland from Tokatoka laso Wednesday and went to Ah dice's boarding-house, in Wyndham-streeb. When he had hib tea he walked outside and mebtbeaccufced with whom he w as pieviously acquainted. He said he was hard up and had .jas'; come out of the Ifo&pi al. lie asked for tome tobacco, which witness gave him Prisoner then asked lor 4d which he did not give him. Witne&s left him and returned to the boarding-house about 10 o'clock, and went to bed in No. 8 room at 11 o cl ck. He knew the cheque produced for £4 KJs 6cl and 16 or 17 -shillinsrs. Ib was in his possession before he went to bed. He folded up his tiou3cr& and \esb in which was the money, and u-=ed ib foi a pillow. A man named "Robctt Feithot&tone shaied the room with witness. Theie was no lock on the door. About 5 o'clook yesterday morning he was aioused by ITeathesrbone. He turned loutid to .speak to him and noticed that the wait of hh own tiousers was hanging out tow aids the floor. Ho searched for his money but both it and the cheque iiad gone. Witness informed the police and stopped payment of the cheque ab the Bank of New Zealand. Charles Ling dopo-ed that lie was a paifcnor of Ah Chees». The prisoner had been staying at hi? hori'&e but did not seep there en Wednesday night. He did on Tuesday night. Witness Jccked the door of the Uoufc at 11 o'clock on Wednesday night. He found the dooi open at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, but could nob account tor it being open. He never saw prisoner in the house on Wednesday. Thomas North deposed that he &aw accused at 6.30 o'clock yesterday morning in the Foresters' Arms Hotel, Albert-street. He asked the landlady to cash the cheque, which she lefused. He then asked witness, who aWo refused, bub' 'lent Ivim Is 6d, 1o be repaid when the cheque was cashed. Witness cautioued prisonei against cashing the cheque as he knew him befo:o and thought that it must be either forged or stolen. He said that he had brought the cheque down from Dargaville. James Webster Matthieson, ledger-keeper at the Bank of New Zealand, deposed that he had seen the cheque pioclticcd. The drawers had an account with their bank. Ho remembered payment be : ng stopped yesterday morning. Shortly afterwards the accused called to ca&h the cheque. Witness asked him to endorse ib. He paid that he could not write, lie gave his name as Lynch. Chief Detective Tuohy deposed to being called to the Bank ot New Zealand yesterday morning ab 20 minutes to 11 o'clpck. He saw the accused there and said to him, " Whab about this cheque you presented to cash ?" He replied, "I gob ib from a man who owe& me some money." Witness asked him to -come with him to that man. He said he did nob know where to find him or who he was. Witness accordingly took him into arresb. Upon searching him lie found 17 a 6d iv silver and 8d in copper.
