DOES WHEAT PAY ?

There is no doubt wheat growing does pay if properly managed, but under a careless slip-shod, haphazard kind of a system it is not likely to bring any profit to the grower. Select a field that is known to be in good heart or naturally fertile, cultivate it well, and judiciously give it all the benefits of early sowing and good seed, and the result will not disappoint the grower. Sheepfarming and dairying are all very well, but combined with a little grain, growing they are r very much better. The sheep cannot graze upon a paddock of grass for a number of years without fertilising the soil, and when the grass requires renewing the future pasture will be none the worse for growing a crop of wheat and one of turnips bofore being- laid down again, especially if a few hundred weight of manure be drilled in with the turnips. The exhoibitan*. high rates and long haulage on the railways is the dragon that devours all the profit in the case of growers- in the remote inland districts, and if the proposed board of commissioners should be possessed of intelligence and common sense in proportion to the amount of their salaries they will soon change all that by revising the tariff so that the far-back settlers will not be so ilisjislrously handicapped in this matter, but will hare a chance to compete in the markets with his mo-re fortunate fello,ws t who arc lucky enough to be situated afr only one-half or one-fourth of the distance from the " Hub of the univeise."
