ATTACK ON GERMANS IN NEW BRITAIN.

The German schooner Uvea, which arrived at Sydney from the islands, brings news of an attack made by the • natives of New Britain on three of the- Gemian resi.dents there. It appears that in the latter part of June last Mr Smaile, the German Imperial Judge of the island, with his secretary (Mr Herring) and marshal went inland for a walk, and had not been long away from the village before they came across a tribe of bush natives armed with • rifles and spears. The natives were evidently bent on mischief, for no sooner did the party come up than they opened tire on them. The three gentlemen being armed returned the fire, and a lively engagement took place. The party managed to defend themselves for a time, and then, as the natives were fast closing in on them, they made off and reached their village late in the evening, , thoroughly exhausted. In their fight with the natives all three gontlemen were wounded. Judge was shot through the hand, \i hilst his secre- ■ tary and the marshal received spear wounds ,iv the back., The matter has been reported to the German Imperial authorities, and a man-of-war will most 1 likely be sent to the island to punish. the natives. .
