OUR MINING EXHIBITS

Wellinc4ToN, September 9. Mr Callis, Secretary to the New Zealand Commission ab Melbourne, writes that every effort was made to get mining exhibits — circulars being sent out all round, and every information afforded, but nothing but opposition was met with. Mr Tolhurst, Acting Executive Commissioner here, writes to the Premier claiming that the fault, if any, is mainly due to the apathy and indifference of the public, and nob to the Commission. Mr Callis states that he sent the following telegram to the Mayor of Grahamstovvn on January^ 10th :—": — " Exhibition Commission — His Excellency (President) invites you to form a local committee for Melbourne Exhibition. The international character of the exhibition isassured, every country asked taking part. Reply." Mr Brodie, Mayor of Grahamstown, replied, "On receipt of your telegram I called apublicmeeting. The attendance was so small that it will not warrant the appointmont of a committee. This feeling arises from the unaccountable manner in which the local Committee ye Colonial and Indian Exhibition were treated, and the manner in which exhibits sent to the previous exhibition were returned." Mr Callis says these telegrams explain the reason of no appointment being made at Thames. ' '
