SECOND SPELL.

The second spell started by O'Connor kicking o ft" for Auckland, the local men having the sun in their faces. The ball was marked by Speakman, who kicked out past the half way Hag. From the throw-in a fast rush by the Auckland forwards worked the ball half-way, when Eagles dribbled to Masefield, who ran back, and was brought down on the 25 yard mark. A. Braund, by a neat dribble, worked the ball to the half-way flag again, where Stoddart and Brown exchanged kicks, the ball eventually going out again half-way. From the throwin England gradually worked the ball up the lield and Stoddart attempted one of his phenomenal "pots." From the kick-out, Paul returned well up the field, and Brown was brought down on the line. Stephen&on and Ryan by dribbling worked the ball past the halfway Hag, and the Auckland forwards carried the play to the visitors' 25. The English forwards worked the ball back to tho centre, and several scrums took place, no material advantage being gained by either side. A dribble by Eagles, and Meldrum missing the ball, gave England a great advantage, and give-and-take play in the open was followed by a good run by Lecky, who took the ball past the half-way flag, where the pass was mulled and a scrum resulted. L. Meldrum bungled a, smart return here, but recovering kicked out of bounds, and gained some ground. Speakman then essayed a run inside Auckland's 25, and tried another shot at goal, Meldrum forcing down for the first time in this &pell for Auckland. Ryan kicked off, and Eagles missing the pass, a scrum ensued in England's side of the 25 flag. After a smart return by Brown, Paul marked, and Brown was compelled to force down. Ryan kicked oil' again, and after some play ot an unimportant character Lecky put in good work, and the ball found its way to past the half-way flag, the ball being worked close to England's goal, and Meldrum missed a splendid chance of potting. Eagles kicked hard down the field to Brown, who sent it to half-way flag, and the ball was returned by Speakman to Auckland's 25. From the throw-in and a pass Speakman got the ball, made a short run, and followed up by sending the ball fairly over the bar, amidst loud applause. England, 3 ; Auckland, nil. O'Connor dribbled off, and from the scrum which ensued Auckland worked the ball to the visitors' 25. Haslam kicked to Brown, who ran to the halfway flag, and was there grassed. Braund passed to Stephenson, who made a good run along the touchlineard vac then thrownoutby Stewart A rush by England's forwards brought the ball to Auckland's 25, where Brooks kicked the bailout, within three yaids of Auckland's corner flag. From the throw-in a scrum ensued, Lecky and Gould making a few yards bj coming through, and then Stoddarb made a grand run across the ground, but was brought down close to the line by Brown. From the scrum Brooks got the ball and made a splendid attempt at goal, Auckland being forced down. Ryan kicked off, and Paul marked. His kick was a failure. Meldrum, Paul, Brown and Dr. Brooks then exchanged kicks, the ball continually going out at England's 25. Masefield made a smart darb up the line, passing to Stephenson, who had to retire, the ball going out in England's twenty - five. Some give - andtake play then ensued, and Herrold gained applause by a smarb return down the centre of the field. Masefield essayeda foolish run, and was speedily grassed From a good kick by Brooks, Brown returned smartly, and Auckland was forced down. Ryan kicked out and Paul returned.
