DEATH OF A YOUNG AUCKLANDER.

By the steamer Whampoa from China news was received of the untimely death in China of Mr Frank Eady, a cow-in of Messrs A., W., and L. Eady, of this city. When the Whampoa left Auckland on her last trip, she had as third officer Mr Frank Eady, but on her retuin trip he caught &mall-pox, and was loifc at Port Darwin. On recovering he rejoined his vessel and was promoted to the post of second ofheer. Some time before the Whampoa left Shanghai for Japan on her present trip Mr Eady left the steamer and took the position of firpt ofliceron a large river paddlesteamertrading up the Hong-kong liver. Whilst proceeding up bhe river it appears that a Chinese passenger threw himself overboard, and Mr Eady at once ran to the side of the steamer and, loaning over, attempted to rescue the man. In doing so, however, he overbalanced himself or in pome way fell overboard, and fcJ'e paddles striking him on the head he sank. The Chinaman was rescued, but no trace of Mr Eady was seen again. The news oi the young man's untiTnely death— lie ha<- not reached his 24th year — gave a severe shock to his relathes in Auckland, as they were e\- peeling to meet him yesterday on the ciriival ot the Whampoa, not being aware that- lie h.id lott her. The officers of the Whampoa '•peak in high terms of praise of Ml Eddy, who was most popular both on the <-Leamei and wherever he was known, and ilic news of Jus death was received by them with deep regret. The young man had just passed his examination for a master's, certificate, and bid fair to become a credit to the profession which he had adopted. The news of his death is received in the city with feelings of the deepest regret.
