The distinguished (iorman chcts player appeared Co be enjoying very good health on Tuesday, and on that evening was piescnt at Simpson's, indulging in his favourite pa&timc. Later on, however, he was suddenly seized with illncbs, cind his colleagues at once conveyed him to the premises of the British (hc&s Club in King-street, Covent Garden. Dr. Zukertort exhibited no indication of recovering ; on the conii ary, he appeared to bo lapsing* into unconsciousness. It was deemed"' advisable to have the unfortunate gentleman removed to the hospital, and, accordingly, in charge of MrXlunsberg, he was. conveyed to the i Charing Cross Hospital, where, on arrival at l,\alf-past two Wednesday morning, he was examined by Dr. F. Jeeves, the resident hi'juse physician. Dr. Zukertort was then unconscious, and Dr. Jeeves ordered his re.aaoval to one of the wards, where he expired at a quarter-past ten in the morning without having regained consciousness. His death is believed to be due to a sudden attack of some form of apoplexy. The deceased was a master of many languages, and was a skilled blindfold chess player, and invaiiably carried off the •honours of games played under these conditions. He gained the first prize at the Paris Chess Tournament in 1878, and won the great London Tournament in 1883 in " unprecedented, style.
