NEW ZEALAND FRUIT IN LONDON.

The venture of forwarding fruit to England from this colony does not appear to have been a success, judging by the price list which has been sent out to the consignees by Messrs Kelling and Hunt. The list it printed at full length, the fruit from the various colonies being put under separate headings. The New Zealand apples ex liuapehu are set down as having realised 7s, 8s 9d, 9s 3d 11s and 13s per case. Quinces brousrht3d per lb, and lemons 7s 3d per case. As they cost 7s per case in transit and other charges, it is evident that this will not pay. Apparently the Tasmanian fruit was better known, as it realised higher prices. On the catalogue are printed the names of the varieties of the Tasmanian fruit, while the names of the New Zealand fruit do not appear This may, perhaps, have militated against the success of tbo sale. For instance, of the Tasmanian apples scarlet pearrnains and scarlet nonpareils bi ought as high as 18s per case, \vhich would prove remunerative. It seems as though the fruit sent from this colony had arrived in the best state of preservation, as no ieinarks are appended to the fruit, while tho Tasmanian apples in various places have the words " frozen," " badly frozen," "slack" and "worthless" printed after the names of varieties These sold from Is to 4s 9d per case. From the prices obtained by our neighbours in Tasmania it would appear as if, by careful selection and proper naming in the catalogues at the other end, there might be a trade opened in this direction for apples Of couivo, it will never pay to send either lemons or quinces at the pi ices obtained by the first shipment. Probably careful packing might result in much higher prices being obtained for New Zealand apj)les.
